The Arabian Desert is not often associated with Christmas and holiday celebrations, yet it is the best time of the year to visit. Temperatures are slightly cooler at 26°C and the humidity is much lower, allowing visitors to really take advantage of the outdoor activities. With the favorable weather comes the opportunity to get out and really explore what the emirate has to offer.

Get an authentic experience in the desert with Platinum Heritage (no belly dancers here). Go zip lining over the Dubai fountains or take a yacht out for and afternoon sail around the world islands. There are plenty of activities to suit all tastes. Dubai is so much more than beaches and malls, although Christmas time is the best time to go to the malls. In December the city comes alive with festivities. The malls, hotels, and restaurants embrace the holiday spirit with ample opportunities for shopping, dining and special Christmas events. Holiday themed brunches, festive menus and Christmas decorations galore can be expected all over the city!

Catherine Parker in Lake Tahoe

With fifteen different ski resorts within an hour’s drive, Lake Tahoe, straddling California and Nevada effortlessly offers thrills around the clock. Terrain considered the best in the West, Lake Tahoe has been a winter destination for over 100 years and hosted the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. Looking for an intimate ski hill that never feels crowded, Lake Tahoe has it. A high-end, ski-in, ski out resort that mirrors an Alpine Village, Lake Tahoe has that too. For the daredevil borders, Lake Tahoe offers terrain parks at its top resorts. I carve powder through a glade in the evergreens while grabbing glimpses of a pristine blue lake that never freezes.

On a sunny day, the mountains sparkle like they are dusted with diamonds. The scenery is for the adults but what about the kids? I found a crazy amount of tubing and sledding, at resorts or the nearby national forests. Northstar, Heavenly, and Squaw Valley ski resorts offer outdoor ice skating with rentals.

Snowmobile tours and horse-drawn sleigh rides can’t be topped for backcountry scenery. Snowshoes or cross-country skis offers more ways to explore. Lake Tahoe does apres-ski better with casinos in Incline Village, Stateline and Crystal Bay on the Nevada side of the lake.

The best place to spend Christmas will definitely go to New Zealand. New Zealand is a country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is a country with both volcanoes and glaciers. With beautiful boasting national parks like Tongariro, Abel Tasman and Milford Sound, New Zealand definitely tops the list as one of the most beautiful countries in the World. What makes it special is that when the Northern Hemisphere has winters and cold temperatures, New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere boasts itself with warm temperatures. Which ranges between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Luxembourg (which is smaller than the smallest state in the United States – Rhode Island) is a veritable winter wonderland.  The landlocked Grand Duchy is an easy day trip from Belgium, France, or Germany.  Luxembourg’s old town and fortifications are listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. It looks spectacular all decked out in holiday lights.  December is a great time to visit its Christmas markets.

Over 200 free concerts are planned for Winter Lights 2016including a special light and sound show on select nights. The Christmas markets open in late November and are perfect for picking up unique gifts such as handmade wooden toys, ornaments, jewelry, and chocolates. The food stalls offer a mix of local and artisanal regional treats influenced by neighboring France and Germany.

Everything from a variety of Gluhwein (mulled wine) and hot chocolate to traditional Luxembourgish sausages, potato pancakes, crepes, and waffles can be found in abundance.  The Christmas market at Place de la Constitution is best located to take advantage of the riverside views of the Pertussis valley and historical monuments.  The warm fire to sit and sip hot cocoa by also makes a visit to this market a welcome winter indulgence.
